October has been traditionally set aside as a special month dedicated to Mary, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary. Families are encouraged to set aside some time during this month to pray the rosary together. It is a good time to teach our children this beautiful Catholic tradition.

About the Rosary

The Holy Rosary is one of the most well known forms of devotions among Roman Catholics worldwide. Its formal name is the "Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary" and it has been a major influence in Catholic prayer for over 500 years. The name comes from a French word meaning "crown" or "wreath".

Theologians have traced the origin of the Rosary back to the Ninth century as a form of prayer that evolved in the monasteries. It was the Dominicans who worked to promote the recitation of the Rosary as a daily devotion. Through prayer and meditation, we are joined to God through his chosen intercessor, Mary.

Pope John Paul II said that although the rosary is a prayer for peace, "..the Rosary is also, and always has been, a prayer of and for the family....It is important not to lose this precious inheritance. We need to return to the practice of family prayer and prayer for families..."

The Apostles Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried.  He descended into hell; the third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.  I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.  Amen

The Our Father

Hail!  Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope.  To you do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.  To you do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.  Turn then, O most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us; and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.  O clement! O loving! O sweet Virgin Mary!
